Personal Paragraphs, Catholic Leader, Brisbane, 9 October 1977, p 18:

Father Benignus Duffy, CP, who died recently in England, was the first superior of the Passionist Fathers' Retreat House in Hamilton, New Zealand. Born in Ireland, in 1902, Fr Benignus was professed in 1922 and ordained in 1929. On June 14, 1960, he arrived in New Zealand with three other members of the English province of the Passionist Congregation, to establish a monastery and retreat house in Hamilton. Those accompanying him were Frs Eugene Kennan and Paschal Marshall, and Br Jude Arbuckle. In New Zealand they were joined by Fr Stephen Horkin from the Australian province of the congregation. The new retreat house was formally opened by the late Archbishop Liston on June 26, 1960, and for the next six years the work of the retreat was guided by Fr Benignus. On December 14, 1966, the Passionist Monastery and Retreat House in Hamilton passed from the control of the English province to the Australian province of the Passionist Fathers. Fr Benignus and Br Jude, the last two remaining from the "founders," left New Zealand by air to return to Britain. Fr Ambrose Glynn, CP became the first superior of the Australian province in New Zealand.
