Byrne, Peter, Irish, Visitor
One of the Many Collectors from Ireland
Quite an amount of money was poured into the building of Irish churches in the 19th century that had come from appeals made in Australia. Sometimes collectors gave worries to the bishops in the various Sees. Goold can be quoted as one bishop who sometimes, rightly or not, refused permission to collect. Peter Byrne is an instance of one who was not refused. He hailed from the Diocese of Clogher and was seeking help for the building of a church in Monaghan. He is listed in Irish
Directories as the Parish Priest of Kilmore and Drumsnat. He died at Corcreeghagh on 8.10.1883 at the age of 46. It is known that his appeal for funds at least in Melbourne in 1869, was very successful.
