Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 95:

Cowley, Joseph Pius, Very Rev., O.Carm., Irish
First Priest to Obtain Ad Gradum Degree at Royal University, Dublin

Hedge priests in the last century? Hardly. Joseph was born at Moate, near Castletown, County Westmeath on 11 April 1858. His "ad gradum" degree was obtained at the Royal University, Dublin, either before or after Ordination on 26 March 1883. For seven years he was a professor in turn at the Carmelite College, Terenure and at the Carmelite Seminary, Lower Dominick Street, Dublin. He joined the New York City Mission in 1890, remaining on until transferred to Australia in 1895. The junior assistant to Prior Kelly for a few years was soon to be given charge of the Port Melbourne - Middle Park Mission, and higher things were still to come. He left for Rome to become Assistant General of his Order on 23 December 1902. Unfortunately a health failure in the Roman climate marred his career. After returning to Ireland he lived at the White Abbey Monastery, Kildare. At the early age of 48 he made his exit on 17 February 1907. An account of his death and obsequies are recorded in the Irish Independent of February 1907.
