Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
King, Thomas Joseph

Born in Sydney in 1879 he was educated by the Good Samaritan nuns, the Marist and Patrician Brothers and the Jesuits. He studied for the priesthood at St Patrick's College, Manly and was ordained in St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney on 28 October 1905 by Cardinal Patrick Moran. He then was loaned to the Armidale diocese for a year, serving as assistant priest in Bingara and Tenterfield. In early 1907 he returned to the Sydney Archdiocese and was appointed to Broadway, where he later became Administrator. He joined the Citizen Forces in July 1914 as chaplain to the 8th Brigade, and went with the AIF to France. In December 1916 he was appointed senior Catholic chaplain, Australian Headquarters, London, and at the close of the war in 1918 was awarded the OBE. He was made a Prothonotary Apostolic (Monsignor) in 1919, and returned to Australia in 1920. Following a brief period at Tempe he became parish priest Stanmore. He died at Lewisham hospital on 9 February 1954, and is buried at Rookwood.
