Chanrion, Claude, Most Rev., SM, French, Visitor, Golden Jubilarian
Vicar Apostolic in New Caledonia
In some Directories the name is spelt Chaurion. Albeit, he was born on 6 October 1865 in the Lyons Diocese. Profession took place on 24 September 1887. Like all other missioners to the Pacific region he would have passed through Sydney, but the date of his coming is unknown. The 1891 Directory places him in Noumea, N.C.; in Mare, the same Vicariate in 1899. He was appointed Vicar Apostolic to New Caledonia on 1 December 1905 in succession to Hilarion Fraysse, being consecrated on 25 March the following year. The episcopal reign was long - 41 years - and the results, we suppose were correspondingly fruitful. He died on 17 October 1941 at the age of 76, having attained his Golden Jubilee in the priesthood.

Bishop Claude-Marie Chanrion, d. 1941
New Caledonia
He was born in Rhône, France in 1865. He was professed a Marist 1887. He arrived in New Caledonia in 1890 aged 24. In 1891, after a period as an assistant at the cathedral, he was put in charge of the minor seminary set up in St. Louis, until its closing in 1895. His next 10 years were spent at La Roche on Mare. In 1905 he was named Pro-Vicar, and a few months later, at the death of Bishop Fraysse, he was ordained Bishop, Vicar Apostolic for New Caledonia. He was then 40 years of age. He directed the Vicariate for 32 years. Under his leadership new foundations were made at Ponerihouen and Nekliai, and the minor seminary reopened at Nakety. In 1937 he resigned because of ill health, retiring at the Bishop's House where he dedicated himself to the prayer apostolate. He died four years later in Noumea, at the age of 76.
