Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 16:

Callanan, Edward Joseph, Irish
Discontent with Melbourne Mission

The son of Edmund Callanan and Bridget Connolly, Edward (or Edmund) Joseph was born in 1840 at Kilmacduane, Diocese of Killaloe, County Clare. (All Hallows Records of Priests). Before going to the All Hallows Seminary he had studied at Mount Melleray. He was at All Hallows from 1863 to 1867. When Bishop Hynes came to visit All Hallows as agent of Bishop Goold, he advised the youth in delicate health to proceed to Melbourne. Minor Orders had been received in All Hallows, and so the rest of the studies were completed under the Jesuit Fathers at St. Patrick's College, East Melbourne. He was ordained on 24 March 1869 by Dr. Goold. First years were spent in Geelong, 1869-71, followed by brief periods at Gisborne and Brighton. His letters to authorities indicate that he was discontented with his lot, homesick, and in poor health as well. He transferred to Armidale for a while and from there wrote to Dr. Fitzpatrick V.G. seeking an 'exeat' on the plea that his aged father was longing to see him. And there the trail ends.
