Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 35:

Chastagnon, Stephen, French
The Locals Called Him 'Father Cassidy'

He is said to have taught for a while at St. Stanislaus' College, Bathurst in the mid 1870s. Later he gave parish service in Dubbo and Rockley where the locals, finding it hard to get round the French name, knew him as 'Father Cassidy'. His short stay was marked by zeal and popularity. Whence he had come, nobody seems able to tell the columnist. The latter presumes, that after leaving the Bathurst Diocese, he gave service for many years in New Zealand. If that supposition is correct he was stationed at Ashburton (1886) and Darfield (1899)(1903). According to the Auckland Necrology a Father Chastagnon died on 9 January 1904.
