Biographical Notes

Death of the Rev. Father Meagher, Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, 3 July 1902, p 14, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article157698769:

We have received a communication respecting the death of the Rev. Thomas Francis Meagher, who, being stationed at Merriwa in 1870 and for several years later, was well-known to the residents of Merriwa and Cassilis districts. Father Meagher came to this district from Gulgong, and was the second resident priest of Merriwa, and was well and deservedly beloved by his people after several years' faithful service. Father Meagher was sent on to wider fields out west, and being stationed at Coonamble as a centre of operations, had an extensive parish and long rides to various appointed stations. The intense heat (which reached 125 in the shade sometimes), was too much for a delicate constitution, and the result was sunstroke, which brought about general collapse. Medical skill and kind attendance enabled the patient to follow medical advice and return to Ireland, where the climate is more genial. The change brought relief and restored health in a short time and encouraged Father Meagher to return to Australia again, but the effects of the trouble reappeared, and this time became chronic. Both mind and body become impaired by the relapse. The age of deceased would be about 50 years.—Merriwa "Standard."

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Meagher, Thomas John

Born at Moygloss, parish of Fethard, Co Tipperary, May 1848. Educated at Mount Melleray. Studied at All Hallows College. Ordained at All Hallows on 24 June 1872 for the Maitland Diocese. He travelled to Australia with Bishop Crane, arriving in Melbourne in May 1875 en route to Sydney. His first appointment in the Maitland diocese was to Merriwa, his name first appearing in the Baptismal records on 31 August 1875. He was absent from the parish from the end of January 1877 until December 1879 for reasons that are not clear. Following his return he remained in the parish only until 3 December 1880 when he was admitted to Gladesville hospital at the request of Thomas English, Vicar General of the Maitland diocese. He remained in that hospital until his death on 18 June 1902, the cause of death stated as pulmonary tuberculosis. He was buried in the Field of Mars cemetery, Ryde. A small memorial plaque was placed at his grave in 1916-1917 by Fr Edward Gell, parish priest of Ryde.
