Collins, John, Irish
First Pastor of Trentham, Victoria
An account of Father John's life and death can be read in the files of the 'Melbourne Advocate' 2.12.1926. He was a generous man, leaving his worldly estate to establish bursaries in All Hallows and Corpus Christi College, Werribee. Further he gave service in no less than fourteen places in the Melbourne Archdiocese. If he did have a weakness (as reputed) the One who admitted His thirst on Calvary, will no doubt understand. John was born at Newtownsandes in County Kerry in 1870. The All Hallows records say nothing of his family origins, but the Melbourne 'Advocate' records the death of his mother Mary, in November 1901 at the age of 57. Education was obtained at the Parish School, Listowel and at All Hallows. He was ordained in mid 1893 and arrived in Melbourne on the 'Curzo' in October in the same year. The list of Directory tracings is lengthy: Dandenong (1894)(1895); Brunswick (1896)(1897); West Melbourne (1898)(1899); St. Francis' (1899) (1900) ; Clifton Hill (1900); Geelong (1900)(1901)(1902); Geelong (1903); Woodend (1903)(1905). The curate at Woodend was apparently given that part of the parish where the Irish and the 'praties' were predominant - to wit, Trentham. He appears to have settled down there for a six year stay, from 1905 to 1911. After a trip to his homeland in 1911 he started to get on the move again (or was it the Archbishop making the swift shifts?). First, P.P. of South Yarra, then temporary charge of Northcote (1913). From there to Flemington (1915)(1916). Balaclava in 1918. Then, in turn, Adm. Carlton and P.P. of North Brunswick in 1919. He would then seem to have gone back to Balaclava as P.P. (1919)(1922)(1925). A second time P.P. of South Yarra (1926) would seem to be the end of "life's fitful fever" . He died in Coonara Private Hospital on St. Kilda Road on 30 November 1926. The age was 56 and the Mortuary Chapel in the Melbourne General Cemetery holds his remains.
