Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 1, 1979, p 29:

Bourke, Nicholas Anselm, OSB, V.G., Rt.Rev., Irish
Pioneer Teacher and Devoted Servant in Perth

b. in Dublin 10.9.1834; arr. Perth with Dr. Serra in 1855. While working as a Catholic teacher he studied for the priesthood at the early Subiaco Monastery. Ord. and professed as an OSB in '58. He had some country experience at York, Northam, Busselton and in 1887 was recalled to Perth to become V.G. Served until 1911 under Bishop Matthew Gibney, enjoying a plenitude of powers and being highly exacting with the priests in the diocese. His letters in the Perth Archives have at times an extreme air of formality and a pedagogical terseness, for e.g. he calls the frustrated Cistercians in the Kimberleys "runaway missionaries" when they left in the early 1900's. Yet for all his testiness and foibles he was a painstaking administrator and worthy servant. Given monsignorial honours in 1898. Retired to live in West Perth, 1911. d. at St. John of God Hospital, Subiaco on 2.6.1924; age 89. A Diamond Jubilarian with 65 years of service. Burial: Karrakatta.
