Dr. Shiel has already commenced the reorganization of his Diocese by filling up vacancies and redistributing his clergy according to the growing wants of the colony and the means at his disposal. In addition to the appointment of Archdeacon Russell, he has committed the care of the Mount Barker District to the Rev. T. Dowling, assisted by the Rev. T. Bongaerts. The mission of Gawler Town will be filled by the Rev. M. O'Connor. The Rev. C. Reynolds is about to take charge of Penola, the Very Rev. Father Dowling, at Kapunda, South Australian Weekly Chronicle, Adelaide, 15 December 1866, p 7, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article94746493: The Catholics of Kapunda and the surrounding district presented the above clergyman with a splendid gold watch and appendages on Wednesday, the 12th instant, as a token of their respect and esteem on the occasion of his departure from Kapunda to another sphere of labor. On the case of the watch was engraved the following inscription: — "Presented to the Rev. T. Dowling by the Catholics of Kapunda on his departure from them." The watch and appendages were of the value of £34 10s., and were supplied by Mr. Kemp, watchmaker, of this place. The presentation took place at the residence of the Rev. F. Byrne, when the following address was read by Mr. Besley on behalf of the Catholics of Kapunda: — "To the Rev. Thomas Dowling. "Reverend Sir — We sincerely regret your departure from Kapunda, in which, though your sojourn was comparatively short, you endeared yourself to us by your untiring zeal for God's honor and our good and happiness. "The suddenness of your departure did not give us an opportunity to express these sentiments of our affection, and to present you with a small token of our remembrance. "We therefore, Reverend Father, on behalf of the Catholics of Kapunda, beg to present you this short address, and this gold watch and chain, as a token of their great esteem for you. "Signed on behalf of the Catholics of Kapunda." The rev. gentleman very feelingly replied as follows:— "My dear friends — I thank you from my heart for your address and testimonial. It is true, as you remark, that my residence amongst you was only for a short time ; but I shall always look to that time, the beginning of my missionary labors, with the greatest pleasure." "You are pleased in your address to give me credit for zeal in the discharge of my priestly functions. This I attribute to your own goodness ; and although I have yet to hear from the just Judge whether or not my labors among you have merited reward or punishment, yet your sincere appreciation of my humble efforts for your spiritual welfare encourages me to hope that I have not labored in vain. Your beautiful testimonial I do appreciate as a token of your esteem, and, be assured, that I shall always remember with sincere affection my very dear friends in Kapunda. Again, I thank you, and I fervently pray Almighty God to give you and your families every grace and blessing." Father Dowling was not long a resident in the neighborhood before he endeared himself to all with whom he was acquainted, and his departure is looked on with regret. --- Death, South Australian Register, Adelaide, 8 June 1868, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article39190744: Dowling.—On the 7th June, at Mount Barker, of consumption, the Rev. Dowling, South Australian Register, Adelaide, 9 June 1868, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article39192523: The late Rev. Thos. Dowling, Catholic clergyman, who died at Mount Barker on the 7th instant, at the early age of 30, arrived in this colony between three and four years ago, and first had the charge of St. John's Church, Kapunda. About fifteen months ago he was transferred to Mount Barker. Since that, through his agency, churches have been built at Macclesfield and Blumberg, and the place of worship at Mount Barker restored. Before the time of the change in his residence consumptive symptoms began to show themselves, and the rev. gentleman obtained the advice of several medical men, whose unanimous opinion was that he could not survive long. Father Dowling was a most zealous and active man, and secured the affection of all with whom he came in contact. The funeral takes place to-day at Mount Barker, several of the Catholic clergymen having left town to attend it. --- Kapunda Herald and Northern Intelligencer, 12 June 1868, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article108264277: We regret to have to notify the decease of the Rev.
