He attended the Affane National School, then the Christian Brothers College, Lismore. He studied at St John's College, Waterford, and was ordained at Waterford for the Armidale diocese with Thomas P Geary on 21 June 1936. He arrived in the Armidale diocese on 11 November 1936 and was appointed assistant priest, Tamworth, where he remained until November 1942 when transferred to the cathedral parish. He was known as having a good tenor voice. In September 1946, after six months as locum tenens at Walgett he was appointed parish priest, Ashford. He remained there for six years. A new church at Bonshaw, opened in late 1950, is regarded as his finest achievement. He was then transferred to Bundarra at the end of 1952 but suffered from illness which increasingly was apparent for the last two months of his life. He died on 26 August 1953. He is buried in Bundarra cemetery, The inscription on his tomb reads 'Parish Priest of Bundarra, aged 42 years'. An uncle, also Michael O'Flynn, was a priest in the Brisbane Archdiocese, located at Gympie at the time of the nephew's death. (Reproduced by permission of Tom Campbell.) |
