Armidale. Death of the Rev. D. A. J. O'Keeffe, Freeman's Journal, Sydney, 27 August 1881, p 9, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article115455360:

With much regret, I have to chronicle the death of the Rev. Father O'Keeffe, who died last Monday, at a house belonging to Mr. Melville, on the Inverell road. The deceased had only been in the colony for about three years, being engaged in the first instance in Queensland, under the late Dr. O'Quinn, who has also passed away from the scene of his varied labours during the past week. The climate of Queensland proving too severe for his constitution, Father O'Keeffe came to this diocese, and was for a time engaged by his Lordship Dr. Torreggiani as assistant at Glen Innes, and subsequently at Kempsey and Armidale. The Bishop having determined to form a new parish including Warialda, Moree, Bingera, and adjoining districts, Father O'Keeffe was appointed first pastor, and had set out on his journey, resolved by his energy and determination to render a good account of his stewardship, when he was suddenly arrested by the cold hand of Death, and borne to the silent land beyond the grave. In the prime of his life and apparently in good health, poor Father O'Keeffe started in his buggy for Warialda, accompanied by Mastor H. McShane, only a few days previous, and the news of his sudden death came like a shock to his friends in this district. It appears that shortly after starting Father O'Keeffe became unwell, but endeavoured to push along till within ten miles of Inverell, when he had to succumb, and a messenger was despatched to town for Father John at Inverell, who was shortly in attendance and administered the last rites. Father John returned to Inverell for Dr. Segol, but before the Dr. arrived Father O'Keeffe had breathed his last. The remains were interred at Inverell on Tuesday, and lie beside those of Father McLaughlin and the late Father Davis. The immediate cause of death was disease of the heart, accelerated by a cold caught on the way. A solemn requiem Mass is to be chanted on Tuesday for the repose of the soul of Father O'Keeffe and of the late Dr. O'Quinn of Brisbane. Requiescant in pace.

O'Keeffe, Daniel A J

Date and place of birth unknown. Education details unknown. Place of study unknown. Date and place of ordination unknown. He came to the diocese from Queensland in approximately 1878, forced south from the Brisbane diocese by ill health. His first appointments were as assistant priest Glen Innes, Kempsey and Armidale. In July 1881 he was appointed to the charge of the new mission comprising Warialda, Bingara, Moree, Yetman and Goondiwindi, to be based at Warialda. On his way to his new area of responsibility he took ill, and headed for Inverell, dying 10 miles from Inverell at the home of a Mr Melville, Inverell Road. Bishop Elzear Torreggiani and P J O'Connor, having heard of his sudden illness, started out from Armidale for Inverell, were advised while travelling of his death, but arrived in Inverell in time for his funeral. The cause of death was reported as 'disease of the heart, accelerated by a cold caught on the way to his new mission'. He died on 3 August 1881, and is buried in Inverell cemetery. His name is shown in various records as 'Niel O'Keefe'. 'Niel' possibly is an abbreviation of 'Daniel'.
