Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, pp 68-69:

Collins, Thomas S., Irish
In a Collision with the Fair Sex

He was kept on the move in the Melbourne Archdiocese. To explain the caption, while relieving Dean Hegarty at Kyneton, circa 1896, he achieved more newspaper attention in colliding with two women on his pushbike than would be afforded in a major road accident today. Father Tom was born in 1859 in County Clare and studied at Maynooth, being ordained on 21.6.1891. His Bishop agreeing, he came to the Melbourne Mission - arriving in October of the same year. Directories indicate his mobility and wide experience:- St. Patrick's Cathedral and St. Brigid's, North Fitzroy, 1891-2; Daylesford 1892-3; Kilmore 1896 to 1903; P.P. of Northcote 1903 to 1910 (circa); overseas in 1910; temporary charge of Coburg 1910; Meredith 1911-12. Queenscliff (circa 1914); Mentone (1915)(1916); Gisborne (1916)(1917). Then came a sick leave period, spent probably with the Little Sisters at Northcote. In 1922 he retired to Beaconsfield. Death came his way in 22 July 1924, at the age of 64. His remains lie in the Mortuary Chapel at the Melbourne General Cemetery.
