Biographical Notes

Walhalla, Wednesday, The Argus, Melbourne, 4 April 1895, p 6, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article9352897:

A very pleasant meeting took place to-night at Walhalla to bid farewell to the Rev. Father Dawson, who has been officiating as Roman Catholic priest in this district for four years, and is returning to Ireland. Members of all denominations were present. Mr. Healy, who occupied the chair, in a very appropriate speech, referred to the excellent services rendered by Father Dawson to his congregation during his term here, and presented him with a purse of sovereigns. Father Dawson feelingly responded.

Dawson, Peter, Irish
Temporary Servant in Sale Diocese

When Bishop James Francis Corbett was overseas in 1890, seeking replenishment of a much-needed personnel, he found a volunteer from the Cloyne Diocese in the person of Peter D. Dawson. Maynooth records in the Irish Ecclesiastical Record show that Peter had been a Maynooth student. Matriculation is dated 6.9.1883 and Ordination on 8.12.1889. (No. 1715 Maynooth list of Students). He must have embarked with the Bishop immediately after Ordination for both arrived in Melbourne on 31 February 1890 aboard the 'Ormuz'. The newly-ordained was sent as first Pastor of Cowwarr, spending there a profitable five years. After a farewell function in April 1895 he apparently returned to the Cloyne Diocese.
