Marist Provincial in New Zealand
Another passer-by through Sydney in 1878 or 1879. In the Marist Year Book of 1927 for New Zealand and Australia the following details are recorded. Thomas Devoy was born in Queens County, Diocese of Kildare, on 24 April 1843. He studied at Dundalk and Belley in France, receiving his Marist profession on 29 September 1874. After his Ordination in 1877 he taught at Dundalk and the following year (or 1879) arrived in New Zealand. He served at Christchurch (1880), Kumara (1881-2), Timaru (1882-3), becoming Procurator at St. Patrick's College, Wellington in the years 1891-1900; was Marist Provincial in the years 1900-1907: gave service at St. Anne's Wellington from 1908 to 1919 and at Island Bay from 1919 to 1927. A golden jubilee of service in the priesthood had been attained when he died in Wellington on 11 June 1927. Some of the more precise datings given above have been taken from Father John Hosie's Thesis 'The Marist Fathers in Australia' (Appendix, Sydney 1971).
