Bourgeois, Viventius (Vincent), Very Rev., French
Suspended by a Dean, Later a Dean Himself
b. 1807; arr. Syd. on 'John Woodhall' 11.1.1843, being recruited by Dr. Ullathorne. Teacher at St. M. Seminary and played a leading part in choral functions. Received a Government salary of £200 per annum. Stationed at Bathurst from Oct. '44 to early '46, carrying out the assignment of gaol chaplain. He then came to St. Francis' Melb. as assistant to Vicar Forane, Fr. P.B. Geoghegan. The V.F. was wrapped on the knuckles by Abbot Gregory for suspending his assistant, "an uncanonical action". B. duly left after tendering an apology. On return to Bathurst he was nominated a Dean. In 1850 he returned to Melbourne, serving first at St. F. and then becoming the first resident on the
Heidelberg mission, probably living in the vicinity of today's Preston. B. did splendid work, setting up a school at Broadmeadows and commencing a stone church at Heidelberg (F.S. Easter 1852). Returned to France on the 'Kent' 25.3.1857. His later career has not been traced.
