Biographical Notes

Fr Frank Cresp, Good and Faithful Servants: Recalling the Spirit of the Deceased Priests of the Diocese of Port Augusta and Port Pirie 1888-2008, 2008:
Ryan, Edmund

Born: 1870 in Tipperary, Ireland.
Ordained: June, 1912, in Genoa, Italy.
Diocesan Consultor 1929. Port Augusta 1913; Peterborough 1915-29; Pekina 1930.
Died: 31/3/1932. Buried in West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide.
He came from Mt Mellery to Genoa where the Rector of the Seminary wrote to Bishop Norton in 1908. "He has no philosophy, cannot understand theology, and professors say it would be better to teach him the catechism privately, in order to enable him to do some priestly work. Here he only loses the time and does not understand the teaching. He is so good. I would be very sorry to lose him. I'll do all my possible to keep him - let us hope we will succeed."
Margaret Press: "The rector's recognition of the student's worth was justified as Ryan worked zealously in Peterborough and elsewhere and became the close friend of Bishop Andrew Killian. The Petersburg Mission and Stations Book Records his insistence that children become word-perfect in the catechism, not surprising in view of his special tutoring."
