Biographical Notes

Fr Frank Cresp, Good and Faithful Servants: Recalling the Spirit of the Deceased Priests of the Diocese of Port Augusta and Port Pirie 1888-2008, 2008:
Redden, James

Born: 1870 at his parents residence at Pekina.
Attended St Joseph's School, Pekina, and Christian Brothers College, Adelaide, before studying at St Patrick's College, Manly, NSW.
Ordained: 1900.
He spent a period of time at Jamestown. He was then appointed to the parish of Kooringa (Burra) where he exercised great influence especially with the young men in the field of athletics. His means of transport was mainly a bicycle which he rode to fulfil his duties at Booborowrie (16 miles) and other places.
About 1904 he contracted consumption and was soon forced to relinquish his duties. After that he spent much of his time at the family home at Pekina. Whenever he was well enough he celebrated Mass in a small room set up as a chapel.
Died: 1/6/1910. Buried at Pekina.
He could rightly claim to be the first born in and ordained for the Diocese.
C/f John O'Mahoney.
One story says that he saved someone from drowning while a student at Manly. Another that he caught a chill riding his bike from Burra to Morgan and back. This kind of behaviour may have contributed towards his illness.
