His early education was with the Christian Brothers at Gregory Terrace. When the family moved to Toowoomba he attended St Mary's CBC, leaving there to study for the priesthood at St Columba's, Springwood and St Patrick's, Manly. John was one of four brother priests within the Toowoomba Diocese and was the first of the four to be ordained at St Patrick's Church on 8th December 1920 by Archbishop Duhig. His first appointment was as Curate at Nambour followed by Ipswich as assistant to Monsignor James Byrne, the future Bishop of Toowoomba. After a period of leave due to ill health, Father Concannon was appointed to Mitchell and twelve months later became the Parish Priest of Stanthorpe. When the Diocese of Toowoomba was erected in 1929, Father Concannon decided to remain in the new Diocese and retained his charge at Stanthorpe until his death in 1937. A solemn requiem Mass was celebrated in St Stephen's Cathedral, Brisbane, presided over by the Archbishop. Father John Concannon is buried in the Toowoomba/Drayton Cemetery.
