Biographical Notes

Catholic News. Diocese of Port Augusta. Departure of Father Bieronski, The Southern Cross, Adelaide, 28 February 1908, p 11, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article166970550:

The Rev. Jas. Bieronski, who has been recently in charge of the Carrieton district, leaves Adelaide to-day by the German mail steamer on a trip to his native land, Russian Poland, with the object of improving his health, which has been failing for nearly two years past. Father M. O'Flynn will have charge of the Carrieton district during his absence.

Father Bieronski has been well known in the Port Augusta diocese as a zealous priest for the past eight years. He is a native of Russian Poland, having been born at Sielce, in the province of Pieterkof, in 1866. He was educated and ordained for the diocese of Port Augusta through the good offices of the late Bishop Maher and the present Bishop (Dr. Norton), and before he came to Adelaide he held the post of rector of the College of St. John the Baptist, in Rome, for two years, under the control of the late Pope Leo XIII, and the late Cardinal Parrochi, Prefect of Rome. He arrived in Adelaide in 1899, and was for a time assistant priest to the Very Rev. T. O'Connor, of the Pekina district. He was also assistant to the Very Rev. John O'Mahony, at Port Augusta, for two years, and was likewise with the present Bishop (Dr. Norton) at Petersburg for nearly three years. He then spent some months with Father Doyle at Jamestown, and afterwards returned to Port Pirie with Father O'Mahony. Recently Father Bieronski has been successively in charge of the Georgetown, Hawker, and Carrieton districts. He is held in great esteem by all Catholics who have been under his care, and was given a testimonial on his departure from Georgetown, of which he had charge during Father Louwyck's visit to India. He has driven over a great deal of country, and has earned praise from competent bushmen for the manner in which he has been able to perform the trying journeys. On several occasions Father Bieronski gave successful missions to his countrymen the Poles at Sevenhill College, with the permission of His Grace the Archbishop and his own Bishop, and he expresses his thanks to the Poles for their tokens of gratitude. Father Bieronski was unable to say farewell to his brother priests of the Port Augusta diocese, owing to the great distances they are apart: but he gave Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament last Sunday at the church in Carrieton for them all.

Father Bieronski is acquainted with many countries, and he speaks four languages—Polish, Italian, English, and Latin—fluently, and could use other languages if the need arose. He goes first to Poland, on the advice of Dr. Hynes, who thinks that his native land is the only thing to restore him. He will afterwards visit Rome, and hopes to be present at the celebration of the Pope's jubilee in September next. He trusts to return to Australia with his health restored for further hard work in a year's time. He expresses himself as deeply grateful to His Grace the Archbishop, the Bishop of Port Augusta (Dr. Norton), and the Catholic people generally for their kindness towards him; and he especially tenders his deepest thanks to the Fathers of the Society of Jesus at Sevenhill and Norwood for the kind treatment which he received at both places.

Bieronski, James, Polish
Porkers in the Presbytery Cellar

Exact origin and education unknown. Served in the Port Augusta Diocese and Adelaide at Petersburg, Hawker, Carrieton, Pekina etc. As well as nurturing pigs in the presbytery precincts he displayed other eccentricities such as dubbing himself a Monsignor and carrying a revolver. His last days were spent in the Parkville Mental Hospital where he died on 3.5.1944. There is no marking on his grave in the West Terrace Cemetery. Attended to by Fr. Chandler OP in last illness.

Note research carried out by Marisa Loren. "Remembered as a kind man especially to the poor and children."
There is a story that he first came to Australia as a young boy with his father - a bootmaker. I can see no evidence for this.
