George Byrne entered the Society at Tullamore, 7 September 1894, remained there for his juniorate, and was sent to Valkenburg and Vals for philosophy studies, 1898-1901. His regency was at St Ignatius' College, Riverview, 1901-08, where he taught and was third division prefect. He was also in charge of senior debating, 1905-08. In 1904 Byrne was elected to the Council of the Teachers' Association of NSW. He returned to Ireland and Milltown Park for theology studies and was a tertian at Tullamore, 1912-13. The following year he was appointed socius to the master of novices. Then he was sent to Australia as superior and master of novices at Loyola College, Greenwich, 1914-1919. He was also a consultor of the Sydney mission, gave retreats, and taught the juniors. This latter appointment occurred when it was decided to re-open the noviciate in Australia. Byrne was lent to Australia for three years, but with the occurrence of the war and delaying tactics of the mission superior, William Lockington, he remained longer then expected. Upon his return to Ireland, Byrne became novice master until about 1923. Later he went to the Irish mission to Hong Kong where he worked for many years, finally retiring to Ireland when quite old.
