Biographical Notes

Dean Martelli. Death in Bunbury. Great Catholic Loss, The Bunbury Herald and Blackwood Express, 9 December 1922, p 23, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article106393863:

The death took place in Bunbury at noon yesterday of the Very Rev. Dean L. Martelli, at the advanced age of 86 years.

The deceased gentleman was one of the most highly respected priests in Australia, and had spent half a century in Western Australia. He passed 25 years in India, where he attained the rank of major in the Army as chaplain.

Forty-eight years ago he arrived in Fremantle where he resided for 20 years, and devoted himself to every class of work connected with the Catholic Church. Thirty years ago he transferred his services to Bunbury, and it was under his direction that the present excellent Convent was built together with the Catholic schools, both in Bunbury and South Bunbury. He was also a very much travelled man, having been in Europe several times.

He had hardly ever complained of illness until 12 months ago, when he had a severe breakdown, but since then he appeared to have partly recovered his former vim and activity. However, his advanced age militated against his return to normal health.

A special Requiem Mass will be held in the Roman Catholic Church at 9 o'clock to-morrow morning, and the cortege will leave the church at 10 o'clock and proceed to the Old Roman Catholic Cemetery, Russel Esplanade, where the interment will take place. The funeral arrangements will be in the hands of Messrs. W. Brittain and Son.

Obituary. Dean Martelli, Advocate, Melbourne, 15 November 1923, p 17, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article171256132:

The oldest priest in the Archdiocese of Perth, W.A., the Very Rev. Dean Martelli, has died at the ripe age of 86 years, fortified by all the consolations of Holy Church. He spent 44 years in the Diocese of Perth. For 60 years, part of which was spent as chaplain to the Indian Army, he laboured as a zealous priest. On Saturday morning, 27th ult., a great concourse of people filled the church, where the remains lay. All the priests who could arrange to come from far and near were present, including the Very Rev. Fr. Fagan (West Perth), Fr. Finnegan (Armadale), Fr. O'Callaghan (Perth), and Fr. Hayes (Victoria Park), Frs. McCormack, Briody, Doddy, and O'Grady. Archdeacon Smyth presided at the Office, and sang the Requiem Mass; the deacon was Fr. Doddy; sub-deacon, Fr. McCormack; and Fr. Fagan master of ceremonies. The parochial choir sang the Mass, ably assisted in the more intricate parts by Frs. Finnegan, O'Callaghan, and O'Grady. Archdeacon Smyth paid a tribute to the deceased priest. R.I.P.
