Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005: Born in Co Kilkenny Ireland, 6 July 1820, place of birth unknown. Educational details unknown, but understood to have been a practising solicitor before studying for the priesthood. Where he studied unknown, although he entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) on 24 September 1846. Date and place of ordination unknown. The published obituary recorded that 'After practising his [legal] profession for a number of years he entered the Society of Jesus and became a distinguished professor of theology of his Order. After several years' residence in Ireland and England the deceased went to South America and held high positions in the Colleges there'. Jesuit records indicate he apparently left the Society in 1866/67. In 1874, recently arrived in New South Wales, he took responsibility for a portion of the northern rivers part of the Armidale diocese from Felix Schurr. He perhaps was at Tenterfield in 1876, then at Casino in 1877. In 1877 he went south to Melbourne and was appointed assistant priest Heidelberg. He then moved to Williamstown, Hotham and St Francis Melbourne. In 1881 he was attached to the Sandhurst diocese, based at the Bishop's House, Bendigo. He remained there until he died. He died in Melbourne on 8 July 1886, after returning to his hotel from his morning devotions at St Francis, Melbourne. He was staying in Melbourne preparatory to retiring permanently to Ireland on the Sorata, which sailed on 9 July 1886. He was buried in Melbourne general cemetery. The probate of his will revealed an estate valued at £3,400. (Reproduced by permission of Tom Campbell.) |
