Biographical Notes

Fr Denis W. Martin, Priests of 1928, Brisbane, 2003, pp :
Patrick Murphy

There are four Father Murphys in this photo and they are all brothers! Patrick John was the eldest, being born at Warwick in 1879. He was in fact the first priestly vocation from there which gave great joy to both James Horan and Fr Potter. That Irish-Australian farm at Swan Creek also nurtured Srs Anselm and Austin for the Mercy order.

After a bush school education, Patrick Murphy was polished up at Nudgee College for four years before proceeding to Manly. It was Cardinal Moran who ordained him at St Mary's Cathedral in 1905. And it was Cardinal Moran who had his way and kept Patrick at Manly on the teaching staff, 'so brilliant did he prove during his studies'.

But Fr Pat was not the big city type, so in 1908 he returned to work as a curate with the other Horans - Andrew at Ipswich and Matthew at Gympie. In 1923 he was appointed as Parish Priest of Red Hill and 'in all humility declined that important parish', asking for St Joseph's Corinda instead. There he remained for the 19 more years of his life as 'a saintly Priest and a model pastor, a gentle, kindly man behind whose manner lay intelligence of a high order and a heart of gold'.

After a lingering death in the Mater Hospital, Patrick Murphy died on 11th June 1942. He was buried at Nudgee Cemetery from the Corinda Church.
