Monsignor Alexander McGilvray, former Administrator of St Christopher's, Manuka, Braidwood, Taralga and Crookwell parishes and author of several books, died at the St John of God Hospital, Goulburn, on Monday, aged 72.

Monsignor McGilvray was born in Goulburn on January 9, 1905, where he later received his education at St Patrick's College.

He began studying for the priesthood at St Columba's College, Manly, completed his studies at the Irish College, Rome, and was ordained in Rome in February, 1929.

After returning to Australia, Father McGilvray served in the parishes of Bega, West Wyalong, Braidwood, Pambula, Cobargo and Canberra as assistant priest between 1929 and 1946.

In 1946, he became Administrator of Braidwood and also served as Administrator of Taralga and Crookwell before becoming Administrator of St Christopher's, Canberra, and dean of Monaro in 1955. In 1959 he became a domestic prelate with the title of monsignor.

In April 1969, Monsignor McGilvray resigned from the parish of Canberra because of ill-health but continued his pastoral work as chaplain to St John of God Hospital, Goulburn, where he remained until his death.

He is survived by his sister, Sister Mary Ignatius, of the Convent of Mercy, Goulburn, and his brother John, of Sydney.

His funeral will take place after requiem Mass at St Peter and Paul's, Goulburn, at 10.30am on Friday.
