Schurr, Felix (Abbé)

Born Strasburg, Alsace-Lorraine, France, 27 February 1827, the son of a vigneron. Ordained Paris 1851. Assigned to missions in West Indies (Antilles). Ill health forced return from Martinique to Paris. He became Professor of Languages at All Hallows, Dublin at the invitation of Cardinal Cullen, and later was Professor of Languages at the University of Dublin. He also was musically gifted. He spent 17 years in Ireland. He offered himself to Bishop Timothy O'Mahony for the Armidale diocese, arriving in Sydney with him on 4 March 1871, and was assigned to northern coastal region of diocese, with Casino as his base. He advocated the growth of sugar cane along the coastal regions. He built the first chapel in Lismore. Following its establishment he remained in the new diocese of Grafton, later Lismore, and was appointed Vicar General in 1899.
