He attended St Mary's CBC there and entered St Columba's Seminary in 1923, following through to St Patrick's at Manly. On completion of his studies, he was part of the first group of five priests to be ordained in St Patrick's Cathedral after the Diocese was formed, on 8th December 1929. After two years mission work at Stanthorpe and Goondiwindi, Fr Crowe had a serious illness which rendered him incapable of routine Parish duties, so Archbishop Kelly, at the request of Bishop Byrne, appointed him to the then vacant chaplaincy of St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill, Sydney. He was there for two years and then embarked upon an academic career in the Faculty of Arts at Sydney University. Two years of his course had been completed at the time of death. His death was quite sudden, having just completed a retreat at Toowoomba and spending a few weeks holidaying with his parents, he was on his way back to Sydney when he suffered a sudden heart seizure. Apparently it was brought on by his having to push his car out of a bog. He was aged 30. Fr Crowe is buried in the Toowoomba/Drayton Cemetery. Reproduced by permission of Bishop Ken Howell. |
