Biographical Notes

Prayer Calendar: Deceased Priests who have ministered the Catholic Faith throughout Toowoomba and districts, 1864–2025, Compiled by Annie Carrett, Diocesan Archivist, 2001, Updated by Gabrielle Saide, Diocesan Archivist, 2023:
Very Rev John Nusfer Michael, died 12 Apr 1968

Born on 27th December, 1905 in Toowoomba, to Joseph and Jessie Michael, he attended St Saviour's Convent and St Mary's Christian Brother's School. Seminary training was at St Columba's, Springwood and St Patrick's, Manly, and he was ordained in Toowoomba on 8th December, 1929, by Bishop James Byrne - one of the first five ordained for the new Diocese of Toowoomba. His first appointment was as Chaplain at St Vincent's Hospital and as Curate to the Cathedral from 1929-31. He was then positioned in Warwick (1931-40); Holy Name (1940-44); PP, Quilpie (1944-48) and PP, Charleville in 1948. When Lourdes Home for the Aged was in planning stages, he undertook the raising of $78,000 throughout the Diocese. For eight months he traveled, visiting every Catholic home. As Lourdes Homes was being erected, his health was deteriorating. He traveled to the US to consult doctors but the diagnosis was terminal. He journeyed to Lourdes, Rome and then home to Charleville. He resigned and retired to Lourdes Home, Toowoomba and suffered in St Vincent's Hospital for ten months before his death in 1968. He is buried in the Toowoomba/Drayton Cemetery.
