Butler, Joseph Vincent, O.Carm, Very Rev, Irish, Golden Jubilarian
First Carmelite Superior in Australia
"One of the most finished and eloquent preachers in Australia" (Melb. Advocate). b. Limerick on 19.9.1844; joined Order '61; ed. at O'Connell St. and Lower Dominick St., Dublin. Ord. 28.10.'68. Seminary Professor. Arr. Adel. 16.4.'81 with the first Carmelite community. Took up residence at Gawler. Then came with the first community to Port Melb., remaining until '94. Became Australian Superior. The beautiful church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Middle Park stands to his credit. After recall to Ireland he was Superior at White Friars, Aungier St., Dublin. d. there 28.3.1918; age 73. Burial: Glasnevin.
