Chareyre, Jean Pierre, SM, French, Visitor
He Declined an Episcopal Mitre
Jean Pierre was born in the Viviers Diocese on 3 December 1834, and received his Marist Profession on 5 January 1859. Date of ordination is unknown. He passed through Sydney on his way to the New Zealand Mission, where he arrived on 7 June 1867. He gave service in Wanganui, Nelson, and Ross. Bishop Viard of Wellington who was having his 'troubles' wrote to the Marist Superior General, Favre, expressing gratitude for Chareyre's coming. Apparently before Croke was appointed to the Auckland bishopric in 1870 the nomination had gone first to Chareyre, who bluntly declined the honour. Later (1874) he appears as Pastor of Christchurch. Some time in the late 70s or early 80s he left the New Zealand scene and returned to France. He died in Paris on 18 January 1900 at the age of 65.
